Sawasdee! Welcome to Thailand Musings!

Thailand Musings I first went to Thailand in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the country. Thailand at that time to me was mysterious and exotic, full of potentials and pitfalls. Fast forward to 2010 and here I am after 13 years and many trips to the LOS sharing, with the help of my Thai wife Golf, my experiences and knowledge with you here at Thailand Musings. Thailand may have lost some mystery for me, but it is still exotic and wonderful and I will always remember that first feeling when I stepped out into the Bangkok smog for the first time. I have yet to learn everything about Thailand and thankfully for all of us Golf is here to correct me when I err.

Help The SET Foundation

Recently I found out about and began making donations to the SET Foundation in Thailand. This is a charity group that helps Thai kids stay in school by providing them with money for school uniforms, books and in some cases scholarships. The SET Foundation has a very specific aim: to make a difference. That difference is between a youngster being able to study at a vocational college or university, or instead having to labor in the rice paddies, on a Bangkok building site, or in some other mundane, dead-end job.

Considering the huge number of kids in Thailand that don’t make it past a 9th grade education I believe the SET Foundation is making a huge difference in Thailand today.

While I am pleased with my own donations I feel that somehow I can do more – with the help of all of you that visit and read Thailand Musings. I have never asked for donations for myself and never would, but I would like to ask your help so that together we can also make a difference. What I am proposing is not a direct contribution from you (although that would be nice too), but rather a win-win-win situation where everyone benefits – you, me and most of all the Thai kids.

Thailand has a huge tourist industry and hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms. And I’m sure that most of you reading Thailand Musings travel to Thailand and make use of the hotels there. What if there was a way for some of the money spent on hotels in Thailand to get redirected back to the Thai kids that need it, rather than going into the pockets of rich corporations? Now there is and together we can make a difference in the life of Thai children.

Simply book your next hotel (and hopefully all of your hotels) with Agoda.com through the links here at Thailand Musings. For every single completed booking I will donate US$5.00 (currently 165 baht). So, 5 bookings – 825 baht donated. 10 bookings 1650 baht donated. And so on. The more bookings that get directed to Agoda.com from here the more money that will go directly back to the youth of Thailand. This is for ALL bookings, so even if you’re not traveling to Thailand you can take advantage of this.

I call this a win-win-win because we all benefit. I do get a small commission for each booking so this helps me to continue to host and improve Thailand Musings. You will get great prices from Agoda.com, super customer service, plus all bookings receive Agoda Rewards Points worth 4-7% of the total cost off the booking, which can be used to save money on a future booking made at any of their 45,000 hotels worldwide. That’s two of the wins.

The third and biggest win is of course for the Thai kids that benefit from the work of the SET Foundation. While US$5.00 may not seem like much I believe that by banding together we can make a significant difference. And knowing that there are literally tens of thousands (or more) of hotel rooms booked every single day in Thailand I feel like the opportunity to give back is huge!

Of course I need everyone’s help to be able to make the greatest difference possible. The good thing is that it doesn’t require anything extra from you. If you are traveling to Thailand (or anywhere in the world) just book your hotel through the links here – you’ll save money on the booking and you’ll be helping kids in Thailand. And if you have a website of your own please post a link back here to get more people booking hotels and increasing the donations to the Thai kids. Or you can tweet this post or Digg it or Stumble it – whatever it takes to get the word out.

Separately and on our own it’s difficult to make a difference, but together we can make a change in many kid’s lives and increase the level of education in Thailand. It costs you nothing extra to make a difference, but there are thousands of youngsters in Thailand who are prevented from achieving anything worthwhile at all, simply because of their impoverished backgrounds.
