Sawasdee! Welcome to Thailand Musings!

Thailand Musings I first went to Thailand in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the country. Thailand at that time to me was mysterious and exotic, full of potentials and pitfalls. Fast forward to 2010 and here I am after 13 years and many trips to the LOS sharing, with the help of my Thai wife Golf, my experiences and knowledge with you here at Thailand Musings. Thailand may have lost some mystery for me, but it is still exotic and wonderful and I will always remember that first feeling when I stepped out into the Bangkok smog for the first time. I have yet to learn everything about Thailand and thankfully for all of us Golf is here to correct me when I err.

Thai University Girls Skirts Too Short?

One very noticeable facet of Thai society is the uniforms worn by every Thai student, both girls and boys, from the youngest right through university students. Of course for us guys the Thai schoolgirl uniforms can be seen as very attractive, however it seems as if old school Thai elders don’t agree. The following article was run yesterday in The Nation, Thailand’s largest business daily newspaper.

BANGKOK: — Chulalongkorn University (CU) is campaigning for students to comply with its dress code, while Thammasat University (TU) wants to the government to launch a “Social Cabinet” to tackle the issue of students wearing uniforms inappropriately.

At the project launch yesterday, CU rector Pirom Kamolratanakul said wearing a Chula student uniform, the only one to be granted by the monarchy, is a privilege.

TU deputy rector for student affairs Parinya Thewana-ruemitkul said the president for Network of Deputy Rectors for Student Affairs supervised the student uniform code at each university. He added that Thammasat was less strict about the uniform than some other universities, but insisted students wear “appropriate clothes” to classes.

Celebrities’ influence

Blaming the influence of fashions worn by movie and TV stars, he urged that a Social Cabinet comprising the efforts of several ministries should be set up to help universities solve the problem. The Culture Ministry could ask celebrities to wear clothes appropriate to the time of day and occasion as well as promote good values, he added.

Deputy Education Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat agreed that students need good discipline and praised universities’ successful efforts in improving the standard of their students’ dress.

Ban Short Skirts?

Ban Short Skirts?

Thai culture is grounded in conformity and part of that is the Thai school uniforms. No student should stand out from any other student. Do you think it is sufficient to simply monitor the student uniform code to maintain what is considered “appropriate” dress, or should the Thai school uniforms be scrapped altogether? In the 21st century is this type of standard a help or a hindrance to Thai society? Or maybe you think it makes no difference whatsoever to the actual education of the students. And what about enlisting the aid of celebrities, do you think this will help? Personally I think that oftentimes the celebrities dress may be determined by their PR people. In most cases celebrities are simply giving the people what they want to see.

Sound off below and let me know what you think about the standard Thai school dress code and the direction it seems to be taking.

Very disappointed to see that the almost essential uni student accessory – the bulldog clip holding up the belt – didn’t get a mention. There absurdity makes me smile every time I see one.

Without wanting to sound dirty old manish, but no the’re not too short.

My opinion is that the Thai school clothing is a bit risqué and inappropriate for such young girls. The outfits show to much and may be considered “sexually” inviting to older males that may see these younger girls as “inviting”, which in Thailand we don’t need more of. These students need to be “protected” from the environment that the Thailand society has with regards to “being ok with the sexual look”. I have been in Thailand many times and have seen these students walking around in their uniforms and I don’t believe that the girls should be wearing such uniforms.

@ Richard – The bulldog clip just looks silly, but it brings a smile and a raised eyebrow to my face as well. I guess the Thai Ministry of Culture doesn’t find them too sexually appealing either since their is no mention of them :>) And you don’t sound dirty old manish…but who am I to judge?

@ Robert – I think the complaint here is against the Thai Uni students who are certainly not too young. I agree that for younger girls the skirts would be too short, but as I’m sure you’ve seen the younger girls (still under their mothers wings) typically wear quite long skirts, below the knee and even longer in some cases. And given the tone of the pronouncement from the story I don’t think that Thailand is “ok with the sexual look”. Overall Thailand is a very conservative culture, despite what many people might believe.

Yes, i am an oldish man, 57and i think they are too short.
It does attract the wrong attention, allthough i do have a “quick’ glance.
It’s very hard not to. I really dont know why they want to wear them like that, unless it IS to attract attention. they must know older men look at them.
Do they want that kind of attention? could some one enlighten me please?

Yes Ken it is very hard not too look and drawing on my experience from my earlier years I would say that is exactly the response these girls are going for. However, I don’t think they are trying to attract the stares of old farangs (I think it’s likely that many of them don’t even notice your presence let alone your stares). What they ARE trying to attract is the attention of the young males in their University and possibly the favor of the older Thai professors. Really not so different from the Uni girls in any country ;)

Why do university students even have uniforms? They get to grow their hair longer at least.

Beautiful women should be appreciated and admired. The students are free independant women and should be allowed to decide the length of their skirts. Would you prefer to have these women hidden away in the Kitchen?

I hate seeing students wearing short skirts. This can be a cause of accidents for them.
