Getting to Know My New Thai Girlfriend

I have my coffee and Saow talks to me. She had left school at 11 to work in the rice fields with her mother. she had an arranged marriage when she was 16 to a whiskey drinking Thai who would beat her when he was drunk. When she was pregnant with the second child. he had beaten her so bad she ended up in hospital and the family had stepped in and took her away from the husband and that was that. But the daughter returned to stay with the mother in law because Saow alone could not afford to support both children. Her work when she could get it was mixing cement for the local builder and seasonal farm work planting and harvesting rice. At best she would paid 200 baht a day (US$6), but getting a full weeks work was impossible. I listen, Her mother had died at the age of 50 who she had loved very much. Her father was a drinker and a butterfly. Her brother did his best to look after her and the children but it was impossible for him to earn enough to cover all the costs. After all he had a wife and a new baby of his own. This conversation went on for many hours owing to the fact that she had to keep looking up words in a very old dictionary. That is how she had learned English from a dictionary. I was amazed left school at 11 and had learned English from a dictionary. Must be a bloody genius to do that.

The children came home from School I could not say a word to them that they would understand and neither could they speak to me, but the boy was showing interest. Remember this boy had never known his father. But he had been told about him. The boy looked concerned he spoke to his mother, she told me he was worried that I would Thai box his mother and he did not want that to happen. Jesus, nothing could be further from my mind and I could not reassure him, that I would never hit his mother. This was not going to be easy.

The next day woke up early, still no luck with Saow, but I did love her. Spent the whole day on the motorbike, out and about this is the field I worked with my mother. I also worked here, and here. nothing was left out. I had a great day.

That evening, I did my best to give her a little of my life story, Divorced, I am a Project Manager, she had no idea what that was, I have just finished the new Arsenal Football ground in London. No idea, I am working on ST Pancras Station in London. No idea. She thinks I am a builder like the guy next door so I think well that’s near enough. Another night of torture on the concrete floor.

The next day I am up early get a cup of Coffee, I am quite happy with early to bed early to rise and while she takes the kids to school I have a quick look upstairs. The whole of the first floor of the house was not in use because there was nothing there, just bare boards. I am thinking to myself, that would convert into 3 bedrooms with no effort at all. Soaw ask your brother if I can build three bedrooms upstairs. The answer came straight back. Yes. That’s it of to the builders yard. I am happy now, doing what I do best, building. See the builder next door and he’s all for it, men arrive and 5 days later we have three bedrooms. Air conditioning installed. Beds arrive, furniture, TV, the lot. All is finished I am happy, not only that, I now have the first night alone with my woman. Kids love the TV, good move that. All is ready for a night of passion.

Shower alone, sprint up stairs, waiting, In she comes, not dressed to thrill, but I did want her. Lights off she gets into bed and nothing. I am thinking what more do I have to do. She takes some pleasing this one. Saow, Saow, I have to sort this out now. It was then I realized she has no idea what to do. On goes the light. The conversation that followed is omitted from this story. However, I get the low down from her on her concept of Thai Love making. Basically if you’re a man, if you want it you take it . And what part do you play in all this. None. Endure it. I tried to explain the concept of it being a two way thing and she confesses she has no idea about making love with a falang and she had no one to confide in. I suggested kissing would be a good way to start. We don’t do that and I do not know how to kiss. Over the next seven days and nights things moved on at a hectic pace, all was happiness and a time of great learning. An old English dictionary does not help a Thai girl learn about love making.

Having fitted out the bedrooms I could not understand why no clothes were in the wardrobes. Answer, the only person with clothes was me.

I fixed that for the kids, but my holiday was nearing the end. I left the village and the two children and spent the remainder if my holiday with Saow in Bangkok. Hotel, hot shower and a beautiful toilet, it was great. Must get her some clothes. Taxi, take me to a nice shop I want some good clothes for my lady. Robinsons is the place for you, we arrived, looks good in we go. My Saow was the worst shopper you could ever imagine. No idea at all. In the end I pushed her into buying something, she says these jeans are nice and I could wear them to work. What, I was eyeing up a lovely looking dress in pride of place in the middle of the shop. No, No this looks good to me, pointing to the dress. I get the assistant I tell her I want the dress along with matching shoes and whatever else. My Saow is not sure about a dress, however she agrees to try it on, with that she starts taking here clothes off in the middle of the shop. I look around not many people about so I leave her to it. Looks great. That’s it off we go to the hairdressers. The full works please. Ok, only be two hours. Later, I had a truly beautiful looking Thai girl dressed and turned out immaculate. All at once, doubt came over me, what had I done to this poor girl. She was everything I wanted as she was. Now I had turned her into my vision of a Western Thai. She seemed happy enough. Off we go to a flash restaurant. Steaks for me and her. Mine was great, the food was good . She did not touch a thing. I had made the same mistake as the clothes. What she really wanted to eat was on sale at the road side cafes not in here. Paid the bill then went to a market stall cafe where she had a choice of all her favorite food. The total bill would not have covered the cost of a bottle of water at the previous restaurant.

Three days later I leave Thailand and my Saow and return to London.
