Sawasdee! Welcome to Thailand Musings!

Thailand Musings I first went to Thailand in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the country. Thailand at that time to me was mysterious and exotic, full of potentials and pitfalls. Fast forward to 2010 and here I am after 13 years and many trips to the LOS sharing, with the help of my beautiful wife Golf, my experiences and knowledge with you here at Thailand Musings. Thailand may have lost some mystery for me, but it is still exotic and wonderful and I will always remember that first feeling when I stepped out into the Bangkok smog for the first time. I have yet to learn everything about Thailand and thankfully for all of us Golf is here to correct me when I err.

Tawanna Square Replaces Suan Lum

Tawanna Square Night Market

Tawanna Square is a smaller, less accessible and yet still chic, trendy and well worth visiting version of Suan Lum Night Bazaar. With Bangkok boasting one of the largest concentrations of markets, malls and shopping areas in the world one might wonder why they would want to visit Tawanna and the answer is simple. Tawanna is a great experience.

Many people are familiar with the Suan Lum Night Market, however since Suan Lum is closing I think many of us will want an alternative. Tawanna Square is that alternative.

Tawanna is divided into different zones labeled A-J which makes it fairly easy to find a shop again if need be. This is a vast improvement over the king of markets – Chatuchak. Have you ever tried finding a stall again there? It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.

You’ll be able to find everything ranging from trendy clothing for both sexes, home-decor items, arts and crafts, tools, electronics and antiques to food. You can even get a manicure or tattoo here. The restaurants aren’t bad, try the spicy southern Thai food at Nang Talung or have an early cocktail at the bar called Toilet (who comes up with these names?).

You’ll find Tawanna Square located between The Mall Bangkapi and Makro Bangkapi on Lat Phrao Road between Sois 144 and 142. It is open from 2pm to 10pm daily. The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi (just tell the driver Tawanna, he’ll know). You can also take the MRT to Lad Phrao station, but you’ll still need to take a taxi from the station to Tawanna. And if you’re really adventurous and/or familiar with Bangkok you can get there by bus, the following busses go to or near Tawanna – bus 8, 22, 27, 44, 73kor, 92, 96,122, 126, 137,145, 151, 156, 178, 182, por or.22, 44, 92, 514, 545.

I went to Tawanna Square for the first time tonight as I in The Mall Bang Kapi and it is only next door.

The place is massive! I don’t think I even managed to scratch the surface of the place and stayed mainly in the section with clothing stalls.

I didn’t see a single other farang while I was there. Suan Lum is a lot more tourist / holiday gift orientated and I love it for that, but it does mean that prices are a bit higher than average. Tawanna was very competitive, I think it was a bit cheaper than Chatachuk which is already good value!
