Definitely go, at least for a few days. There's no place in the world like Bangkok, even though it can be a bit much for some. Take the shopping tips here and I can add to them as well. Avoid the Patpong night market and most of the shopping around Sukhumvit, it's all tourist traps. I had a vendor in Patpong try to sell me the same shirt I had seen earlier at MBK for triple the price. And that was AFTER bargaining with her!

One of my favorite night markets has always been Suan Lum, so I would definitely recommend you check it out. You can find Suan Lum night bazaar at the intersection of Rama IV and Wireless/Sathorn Roads, opposite Lumphini Park at the Bangkok Metro's Lumpini station.
