What Do YOU Want to Know About Thailand?

December 28, 2007

Today I thought it would be fun to open things up to you, the reader. I get emails all the time with specific questions about Thailand, where to go, cultural questions, questions about Thai women and dating. I like this and it’s one of the more rewarding aspects of having this blog.

All of this one on one communication doesn’t help the community though. So, I thought it would be fun to open up a post specifically for Thailand questions.

You can use this thread to ask questions in the comment section about ANYTHING at all Thailand related. Depending on the question I will either respond directly in the comments or write a full post if the question requires more detail.

This is your chance to ask any and all Thailand questions. Traveling to Thailand soon? Maybe you want to know about prices. I could do a Bangkok shopping trip to give you the current prices of common items. What about hotels? Where do I stay if I want to do [fill in the blank]. Where are some good local restaurants in Bangkok (or sushi, indian, italian…you name it)? How does Thai dating/engagement/marriages work? Do I need vaccines when traveling to Thailand? Are there business opportunities in Thailand? Where do I find them?

I think you’re starting to get the picture. This is me opening up the blog for you to tell me what you want me to write about. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of ideas yet and if you don’t give me anything you’ll still get plenty of fresh content here. I just thought that there might be some subjects/questions that people want to know about more than others and this is your chance to let me know.

So, let the questions flow. Keep me so busy writing that I get cramps in my hands and bloodshot eyes. And while you’re at it please subscribe to my feed so you can be sure to know when your question has been answered.

I’m looking forward to hear about all the things my readers want to know more about.

Great blog, I’ve really been enjoying it for a few weeks. I plan to spend at least several months living in Thailand in the year to come. I don’t have a specific destination yet, just plan on wandering around a few weeks until I find a nice place to settle in, most likely near a beautiful beach, not too busy like Bangkok, but not too void of English-speakers and nightlife either. My goals for this extended stay are to live simply for a year, get outside of the materialistic mindset of North American lifestyle, slow down and concentrate on personal development, and of course to learn from a different culture and have fun. So here are a few questions:

*What is the best way to connect with the local expat community before I move over there?

*What are the best ways one could go about finding an apartment or home to rent in Thailand?

*How does one set up a reliable, fast internet connection? (Seems like you must have a reliable connection?)

    Hi Cody!

Thanks for the compliment and I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the blog. I took a look at http://thrillingheroics.com and I’ve got to say I’m impressed. I’ll be adding it to my reader so I can keep up with your 2008 goals :>) And I agree with Penelope Trunk’s open letter to parents and am glad some of your goals are to “get outside of the materialistic mindset of North American lifestyle, slow down and concentrate on personal development”.

All three of these are good questions and worthy of individual posts. Please be patient and I’ll get back to you this week sometime via Thailand Musing posts. I’m already working on what will be a series answering over a dozen questions I received concerning marriage and engagements to Thai women, but I should be able to fit these in pretty easily.

Go grab that RSS button because it looks like I’ll be posting quite a bit over the next week to ten days.

The thing i want to know most about Thailand is how many people and hotels and restaurants there speak English, and if its rare then where abouts are these english speaking locations. Because obviously im a tourist and im planning to go there in the future. So this would be a big help for me, as i can see the language barriers getting in the way of a good holiday. So if you could answer this it would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

    Hi Andy,

Since you’ll be going as a tourist I think you’ll be fine. While the level of English spoken can and does vary greatly from person to person within Thailand you’ll find that the tourist area hotel and restaurant staff speak English to one degree or another.

Keep in mind that Thailand saw almost 14 million visitors in 2006 and many of the schools now include English in their curriculum.

If you could be more specific regarding which parts of Thailand you’ll be in I can be more specific with my answer, but for the most part you’ll have no problems at all in Bangkok and little problem too on most of the islands (Phuket, Samui, Samet etc etc).

Hello Just Started to invetigate the possibility of going to Thailand and experiencing the culture. I spent a month in Laos in Dember 2007 and loved it but it is a different experience. I wish to Holiday in Thailand and have started to try to find a freind on the dating sites. I have a background in Engineering, as a tradesman and also I was an insturctor of Hand skills for Apprentices and Adult Trainees. My question is besides teaching English do they instruct students in other skills and if so how could I find a network to advise me?

    Hi Garry,

Thanks for visiting. Yes they do have some instruction other than English in Thai schools. I will write a post later today to give some idea of where to begin looking for such jobs and what you can expect. In addition, it’s possible we may have an English teacher from Thailand doing some guest posts in the future so please subscribe so you won’t miss anything about teaching in Thailand. Nice to have you aboard!
