Goodbye Suan Lum Night Bazaar

March 5, 2008

Suan Lum Night Bazaar

For those of you that love Suan Lum Night Bazaar like I do take note. Looks like they are finally going to enforce the closing that was supposed to take effect last April. I wonder if this has anything to do with the legalization of gambling? Where else in Bangkok would you find enough open space to put a casino/entertainment complex?

Bangkok’s popular Suan Lum Night Bazaar is to finally close, with its hundreds of tenants moving out to make way for a mall and hotel complex.

“It is the intention of Crown Property Bureau to comply with the court order and to carry out this order as stated,” said the Crown Property Bureau in a statement printed in Thai language newspapers.

Tenants refusing to leave could face “seizure, arrest or imprisonment,” warned the agency.

Well, that just sucks! What next?

    Well…yes, it does suck!

Any idea if some of the merchants there have other stores anywhere? My co-workers and I have favourite sellers there that we buy from all the time! I’m not a fan of JJ…is there any other of the same type of markets?

I really love that place, it is quite upsetting to hear it is closing in a way.

I wonder if a new night market will spring up anywhere?

Right now there’s nothing as good as Suan Lum which is why it’s such a shame that it’s closing. The other markets Golf and I like in Bangkok are Pratunam market which is situated by the intersection of Ratchaprarop and Phetburi (Phetchaburi) roads, very near the Amari Watergate hotel, but is more like Chatuchak and Tawanna Square. Tawanna Square is another night market and can be found next to The Mall Bangkapi, Ladprao Soi 142. It’s not as big as Suan Lum, but is probably the closest thing and it’s possible some of the Suan Lum shops will move there.
